Weight Loss Surgery

Patient Pathway and Preparation

You will be asked some basic questions about your health and medical problems before the consultation. All new referrals are seen by Mr Hashemi himself. Your treatment will be tailored to your specific needs.

During the initial consultation the following should be achieved:

1. Your suitability for surgery - Some patients require additional investigations and treatment before surgery: referral to the appropriate specialist is arranged and any essential tests completed. For example, a referral to a consultant psychiatrist may be required to help us understand your eating habits and to decide on the risks and benefits of surgery, as well as guiding us in allocating the procedure with the greatest likelihood of success. Mr Hashemi works closely with a team of specialists experienced in treating patients with obesity.

2. Treatment of coexisting medical problems will be initiated if necessary.

3. If after discussion, surgery is a suitable option and is likely to be justified in terms of the risks and benefits, then the various surgical approaches are discussed. The choice of procedure will be decided with you, taking your particular medical background, weight history, eating habits and expectations into account.

4. Preparation for surgery – preoperative investigations and other assessments (such as sleep studies) may be required and will be arranged. If you have already had investigations or treatments elsewhere, then it will be helpful if the records of these are sent or brought along.

If a surgical procedure is planned, a provisional range of dates are offered with arrangements to meet again or to speak by telephone several weeks after the first consultation. You will then be sent a diet sheet and other relevant information. This will allow you at least several weeks before surgery to help you prepare for the procedure.
